Cindy & Bryan's Wood Shop
How we got started
As new homeowners we started out with zero tools and zero knowledge, but quickly acquired an abundance of both. We had a choice to make, either we spend lots of money hiring people to do everything and buying furniture or we get our hands dirty and do the work ourselves. It was pretty simple. We like learning new things and have no problem getting dirty and having fun in the process. We also really love not spending money.
The furniture building was Cindy's idea. We were looking at dining room tables from different stores and for the size we wanted they would leap the $1,000 very easily. So Cindy encouraged us to go along with her grand plan of just buying wood and cutting and building the table ourselves. Bryan was skeptical because, honestly, who builds furniture...and will things we make really look good and be stable?
We decided to go along with her plan and we spent a few days watching videos and reading plans and examining tables at the store and my parents house and thought it was something we could figure out pretty quickly. We bought a few tools and went to work and enjoyed it so much we just kept building.
We found there were a few advantages to building your own items. First, it's much cheaper. Obviously this depends on the wood you decide to build with, but it will always be cheaper than buying something pre-made. Second, you can customize the piece however you want. No space is the same size and finding something that will match your exact need is almost impossible, so design your own to your specific dimensions and you will get exactly what you want every time. Third, it's an excellent team building experience. You learn each others strengths and weaknesses and also figure out how to work better together.
We have had a great time over the past few years working on remodeling the house and building furniture and look forward to sharing our future work with you.
Best,
Cindy & Bryan
